Laos Wildlife Rescue Center, Ban Khuen (LWRC), Vientiane, Laos PDR On Tuesday 13th of December the Lao DOFI (Department of Forest Inspection) officials stopped two minivans on their way from the Mekong River bordering Thailand, after a tip-off. Inside both minivans the officials found a total of 165 Sunda pangolins (Manis javanica), totaling about 1,000 kilograms, that had been smuggled just one hour before at the Thai-Lao border at Ban Tha Deua on the Lao side and Ban Had Sai Fong in Phonpisai district of Nong Khai Province in Thailand. Two drivers and one passenger, who was identified as a middleman and known wildlife trafficker in Laos, were apprehended as they were trying to move the shipment to the Lao-China border. All three men were arrested and detained, they are currently awaiting trial. The very weak pangolins and the two minivans were taken by police and confiscated.

On December 11, 2016, Sadao Wildlife Checkpoint and Sadao Customs seized 13,000 Indian peafowl feathers that were smuggled into the country from Malaysia. The seizure occurred at the vehicle inspection checkpoint at the Sadao Boundary Post.  No suspects were apprehended at the scene. The illegal specimens were seized and sent to Sadao Police Station for further legal proceedings.

On December 19, 2016, Nakhon Phanom Wildlife Checkpoint, Division of Wild Fauna and Flora Protection, Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, officials and related departments in Nakhon Phanom Province joined hands in engaging in public relation efforts for ivory control as well as public relation, inspection, and protection against illegal wildlife trafficking along the Thai-Laos borders at the Checkpoint for Border Trade in Tha Uthen District, Nakhon Phanom Province. The products found on-site are commodities and goods for daily life.  Contrabands however, were found and seized during the inspection by officers and sent to Tha Uthen Police Station for further legal proceedings. The contrabands found were the corpses of 14 Shrew-faced Ground Squirrel and 1 Lesser Giant Flying Squirrel.

On December 13, 2016, Officials from Hat Yai International Airport Wildlife Checkpoint in Songkhla Province, southern of Thailand, collaborated with Customs officials in seizing the head of a hornbill. The contraband was found in a package in the Hat Yai Post Office. The package’s recipient is located to be in Bangkok and the sender remains anonymous as the perpetrator didn’t fill out their real name and address. The case was reported to the police in Hat Yai Police Station, Songkhla Province.

On November 30, 2016, The Royal Forest Department, led by Director Chalermkiat Sudsakorn of Strategic and Forest Protection Division, Forest Protection and Fire Control Bureau, received reports of illegal wildlife trafficking around Chatuchak Market. The Department organized a joint effort with the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Suppression Division (Royal Thai Police), Prevention and Suppression Supporting Office 1 and over 50 officials in inspecting and arresting the shops transgressing the law in accordance to the 1941 Protection Act. A total of 5 shops were found to have been in possession of 1004 illegal Wild Orchids. The specimens were then seized for further legal proceedings.
